The wife and I have been in Napa Valley and Sonoma this week so rather than talk about the stock market I’ll share something with you that you might like better…a travel tip. If you ever take a trip to Northern California one of the places you should visit is Napa Valley if only for a day. It’s only an hour away from San Fransisco and barely more than that from Silicon Valley or Sacramento. When we visit we often make Domaine Carneros Winery our first stop. It offers a more relaxed atmosphere than other wineries. Instead of elbowing your way up to a crowded bar to try tiny pours of a variety of wines, you can sit on a patio overlooking the vineyards and enjoy a full glass of Champagne or Pinot Noir. A perfect way to start a vacation day. I’ll leave the rest of the vacation planning to you…because that one stop will make your entire trip.
I got to play fireman recently. The neighbor’s cat jumped from our fence to the roof of the house. One of my kids kept hearing a meow upstairs and saw the cat at a window. He ignored it for an hour before figuring out the cat was stranded. We put a 2X4 from the roof to the fence, but the cat wouldn’t walk down it. I added a can of tuna into the mix and still no response from the cat…other than pacing and meowing. I finally had to get my big ladder out and make my wife climb it to rescue the cat. Ok, I guess I played Fire Chief and the wife played fireman.
We had a flat panel TV go out on us a little while ago. We’d owned it a little over two years which was just past the warranty. The price to fix it would be between one third and half the price of a new TV so we decided just to buy a new TV. We put the old TV out on the curb for eWaste to pick up. About an hour later one of the landscapers in our neighborhood knocked on my door and asked if he could have it. I told him it was broke, but he was welcome to it as I’d rather see it used by someone than just thrown away. Yesterday the landscaper knocked on my door again and told me that when he took the TV in to be fixed that it was still under warranty. He said that the store where I bought it included an extended warranty as part of the deal. He was bringing the TV back to me since it
Merry Christmas! Posts to Downside Hedge will be light this week due to the holidays. We’ll be spending time with family and friends…and trying not to think about the market. We’ll be sure to post updates to the site if there are any changes to our portfolios or something dramatic happens with our Twitter indicators.
My wife has connected with several of her friends from high school via Facebook over the past couple of years. Jobs, husbands, and family have scattered them across the western united states. They recently got together after more than 30 years without contact. My wife was nervous about the trip, thinking that they’d have nothing in common anymore, and spend the weekend staring at each other. She was pleasantly surprised to find that nothing at all had changed. They talked non stop from the moment they met in the airport till they all flew home. I’m guessing that it was a weekend filled with pedicures and pillow fights (or whatever girls do when they get together). Take this as a reminder that friends and family are the important things in life.
Happy Thanksgiving! These guys were walking up my street today. Pretty brave considering the season.
I think this will be the last Daylily in my yard for the year. It’s officially fall…where I live anyway. I’ll be raking leaves from now till Christmas Eve (when winter starts).
We used to live in the Rocky Mountains, but got tired of the long winters so we moved to Northern California. We still have family living in the mountains who have found ways to overcome the snow. Here’s a picture of my brother-in-law getting into the hot tub today. The down coat and fleece lined boots won’t ever be the same. Below is a picture of my street today. Here in Northern California the leaves are just starting to turn. We had 80 degree weather last week, but it’s getting nippy this week with the temperature in the high 60s.
