Number of Twitter Stocks in Confirmed Uptrend Falls

I’m starting to see fewer stocks in confirmed up trends among the 50 most active stocks on Twitter.  Several stocks over the last week have continued to show sentiment with a negative divergence from price.  In addition, consolidation warnings are starting to pick up.  Currently on 48% of stocks are in an uptrend confirmed by sentiment. This isn’t too concerning yet, but something we’re watching. Below are charts of the intensity scores for the most active stocks on Twitter for the week and month ending 8/13/13.  Below that is a chart of the status of the 50 most active stocks on Twitter.

Most Active Stocks on Twitter Showing Weakness

The list of the 50 most active stocks on Twitter are starting to show some weakness. Although the number of stocks in a confirmed downtrend is falling, so are the number of stocks in a confirmed uptrend. Instead I’m starting to see move negative divergences and stocks that have unclear charts. Below are charts with the intensity scores for the most active stocks on Twitter for the week and month ending 8/6/13. Below that is a chart with the status of the most active stocks.

Gold Stocks and Silver Make it Back to the Bullish List

Randgold Resources (GOLD) and silver (SLV) are back on the most bullish stocks on Twitter list (for the past week).  For a sustained advance the precious metals will need to make it back to the monthly bullish list.  Another interesting point is the bank stocks are floating back to the top of the list. Below are charts with the bullish intensity scores for the most bullish stocks on Twitter for the week ending 7/16/13.

Tesla Motors Overtakes Apple as Most Active

Tesla Motors (TSLA) did what no other stock has been able to accomplish. Over the past week it had a higher volume and intensity of tweets than Apple (AAPL). From the time we’ve been tracking Twitter sentiment AAPL has always been the most active stock on Twitter (on a weekly and monthly basis) so this is quite an accomplishment…even if TSLA only beat AAPL by a few points. Below are charts with the intensity scores of the most active stocks on Twitter for the week and month ending 7/16/13. Here is a chart with the status of the 50 most active stocks.

Starting to See Some Buy Signals From Twitter Sentiment

Buy signal for Walt Disney stock (DIS)

During the recent consolidation in the market we became concerned that we weren’t seeing a lot of positive divergences or buy signals from Twitter sentiment.  Unlike the small dip in April which created several good long setups, the larger consolidation and retracement rally in May and June didn’t produce any.  Our concern was that the general market was moving higher, but actively traded and momentum stocks weren’t being bought with conviction (as evidenced by sentiment on the Twitter stream). That situation now appears to be resolving itself.  Over the past few days we’ve had three long setups.  Those setups come just behind a reconfirmation of the uptrend from sentiment for the S&P 500 Index (SPX) and the Russell 2000 index (RUT).  This is a positive sign for the market going forward as it shows widely held individual stocks supporting the rally. Below are charts of the three recent buy signals (green vertical lines indicate the setup date).  All of them are now getting extended and close to their all time

Earnings Season Brings Alcoa to Most Actives

Over the next month or so the most active list (on a weekly basis) will most likely be littered with companies reporting earnings. Alcoa (AA) made an entrance this week as one of the few widely followed stocks that have reported.  Keep an eye on this list over the coming weeks to see which companies are getting a lot of attention on Twitter due to their earnings reports. Below are charts of the intensity scores for the most active stocks over the past week and month (ending 7/9/13).  FYI, I posted the status of the fifty most active stocks yesterday.

Research in Motion Joins Most Active List

Shooting higher or falling hard is one of the things that will put a stock with previously lackluster intensity scores near the top of the most active stocks on Twitter. Tesla Motors (TSLA) shot higher to gain the list while Research in Motion (BBRY) dropped by nearly a third in a day to get its status. The other thing that helps stocks stay active on Twitter is is a good story or a cult following.  Gold (GLD), Silver (SLV), and Gold Stocks (GDX), Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG), Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), and Netflix (NFLX) fall into this category. Below are charts of the intensity scores for the most active stocks on Twitter for the week and month ending 7/2/13. Below is a chart with the status of the top 50 active stocks on Twitter.
