Most Bullish Stocks on Twitter

Just as we’re starting to see some of the momentum stocks show up on the bearish list, they’re dropping off both the weekly and monthly most bullish list.  Stocks like Facebook (FB), LinkedIn (LNKD), Priceline (PCLN), and Yelp (YELP) have dropped out of the top 25 most bullish stocks on Twitter in both time frames.  Yahoo (YHOO) is still on the monthly list, but has dropped off the weekly list. At the least we’re seeing market participants taking profits due to the gridlock in Washington.  At the worst, the party is over for the high fliers.  Somewhere in the middle is an outcome where profits are being taken from the high fliers and will rotate into stocks that have been consolidating.  A rotation into high quality stocks that are selling at a discount could still fuel a year end rally if the debt disagreement in Washington is resolved. As I mentioned in the bearish list post, keep an eye on the consolidating stocks to see if they’re holding up better

Number of Twitter Stocks in Confirmed Uptrend Falls

I’m starting to see fewer stocks in confirmed up trends among the 50 most active stocks on Twitter.  Several stocks over the last week have continued to show sentiment with a negative divergence from price.  In addition, consolidation warnings are starting to pick up.  Currently on 48% of stocks are in an uptrend confirmed by sentiment. This isn’t too concerning yet, but something we’re watching. Below are charts of the intensity scores for the most active stocks on Twitter for the week and month ending 8/13/13.  Below that is a chart of the status of the 50 most active stocks on Twitter.

Agriculture Stocks Jump onto Twitter Most Bearish List

Bad news out of Potash (POT) increased both the volume and bearish intensity of tweets for the agriculture stocks this week.  Mosaic (MOS) fell victim as well.  This came as a big surprise to many, but taking a look at an agriculture ETF (MOO) you can see that agriculture has been in trending lower from early in the year.  Also of note is that Caterpillar (CAT) leads the list this week, and emerging markets (EEM) and  Dow Chemical (DOW) made the cut.  This is starting to paint a picture of even more weakness in the most basic sectors of the world economy. Take a look at some charts of the other stocks on the most bearish list and you’ll see it littered with bad surprises.  This may be early warning that the slow world economy is finally having an impact on the United States. Below are charts with the bearish intensity scores for the most bearish stocks on Twitter for the week and month ending 7/30/13.
